3 Best Teas for Gut Health

I’m weird…

The taste and smell of coffee gag me! I’ve tried to love it but there’s something about it that I just can’t stomach.

Unfortunately, I love wrapping my hands around a hot mug.

What I’ve learned in my gut healing journey is that tea helps to promote digestion. Tea also helps to relieve bloating or other digestive symptoms and can bring some instant sense of relief.

Peppermint tea is my go to remedy for upset stomach, gas, bloating or simply helping the digestive process along. It provides quick refreshing relief and kicks in the sensory board. I also like to blend peppermint tea with other less yummy tasting herbs (like turmeric) to make them go down easier.

Stress is a HUGE instigator of gut health deterioration. When you’re stressed your inner resources get diverted to deal with the lingering “threat” whether it’s real or perceived. The digestive enzymes stop working and blood is diverted elsewhere so digestion is placed on the back burner.

In my opinion one of the least talked about but most healing herbs is Licorice root. It has a long history in supporting the stressed out adrenals and an inflamed gut. Life is so crazy that I use this supplement daily!

Licorice root tea helps calm the nervous system while promoting healthy digestion. It’s naturally sweet and I find a cup of licorice tea after dinner gets rid of my craving for a chocolaty dessert (not that there’s anything wrong with that). I’ve used licorice to reduce heartburn and it’s very soothing for stomach and intestinal lining irritation.

Nettle tea is a deep green tea made from stinging nettle leaves. It’s high in magnesium which can help to relax the muscles in the colon and make for easier elimination. Nettle is high in nearly every mineral and chlorophyll which helps with detoxification. I like to blend nettle leaves with peppermint and licorice for a triple power tea that meets all my digestive needs. The licorice adds sweetness while the mint detracts from the grassy tasting nettle. It’s really a lovely blend.
