6 Ways to Avoid the Weekend Weight Gain

gut health health tips Aug 04, 2021

“HELP! I love to drink and eat on the weekends. I don’t want to ruin everything I did during the week. “

Are your weekdays like: Get the kids out the door with pants on (shoes are iffy), attend 7 meetings a day while finding time to pee at least once, pick the kids up and cart them around like #ubermom, get the kids fed and into bed before we go bat-shit-crazy.

No wonder it’s like “mom’s gone wild” on the weekend, look at all you do during the week!  If you continue down the path of “gone wild,” the 7 bottles of wine plus 5 sleeves of cookies every Saturday morning :) will eventually catch up with your booty and you’ll be +20 lbs at the end of the year.

So, what’s a mom to do?

6 Ways to Lose Weight When You Need to Decompress on the Weekends

You just completed another week of being SuperMom.  You gave everything you had and now you want to Netflix and Chill.

Losing weight does not have to be stressful, painful, or outrageously difficult. Many people lose significant amounts of weight just by tweaking their diet and making small changes to their routine. You do not have to deprive or abandon your favorite foods. You don’t even need to center your life on the treadmill or weight room.

Eat what you love by controlling your portions:

Want chocolate?  Buy individually wrapped +70% dark chocolate squares to refrain from eating the whole bar.

Want wine?  Drink 12 oz water, a ½ glass wine, 12 oz water, ½ glass wine, etc. Or pour a ½ glass wine and fill the rest of the glass with sparkling water.  Tricks like this will make your tasty moments matter.

It takes 20 minutes for your body to register that it’s full. Don’t wait to eat until you’re starving or else you’ll devour whatever is in the pantry.  Eat 1 serving of veggies and protein to see if the smaller amount satisfies you.

Hydrate until you’re running to the bathroom every 2 hours:

When you’re not drinking wine, increase your water, green tea and kombucha intake! Water is the cheapest weight-loss drug on the market. It will help you feel full, improve your skin’s appearance, increase your energy, burn more calories, and detoxify your body.

Daily consumption of green tea and kombucha will also help you burn more calories at a faster rate by improving your metabolic system.  Try drinking green tea twice a day after your meals.

Take glucomannan supplements:

Glucomannan is one of the few weight loss supplements that is actually healthy and has been proven to show actual results. It is very low in calories and high in fiber, making it a good appetite suppressant. This supplement may be helpful for people who struggle with binge eating. Glucomannan is water-soluble so it helps reduce water weight and bloating.

Trick your stomach with foods high in fiber:

Our Nation is not protein deprived, we’re fiber deprived! Fiber keeps your stomach full, curbs hunger pangs and helps limit your calorie intake. Foods that contain a high amount of fiber are beans, lentils, rice, items listed as “whole grain” on their label, and nuts like almonds, pecans, and walnuts. Other good options are quinoa, bran-based cereals, oats, and apples.

Eat hydrating foods:

Adding foods with high water content, like watermelon, zucchini, strawberries, cucumber, broccoli, yogurt, cantaloupe, and fish, will help your stomach feel full and reduce cravings.  Many of these foods make great alternatives to your previously unhealthy foods. For example, if you are craving a thick milkshake, try one with yogurt, fruit, and ice. Zucchini or spaghetti squash also make great substitutes for pasta.

Avoid going anywhere hungry:

I will NEVER recommend skipping meals so that you can save your calories for later. It leads to binge eating and consuming more calories. Before leaving the house fill your belly with satisfying foods like veggies high in fiber, lean protein and whole grains.  Having a full belly will help you from mindless snacking while you’re out.
